kenlight In 1981 I was a young university student just discovering the world of art, math and literature.
I came across this tape which put to music some of that world and caused me to ponder on the things of life like impressionist art, marriage and humanity. I nearly wore the tape out. Favorite track: The Moulin De La Galette.

Happy Ending 04:16
Happy Ending By Jeff Johnson The hero wins the race in just the nick of time, Before he won, he was in last. But yet he's won and now his girl friend comes and kisses him, And they walk happily off into wonderful bliss, Happily of into wonderful ... Every story's s'pposed to have a happy ending, At least that's what we're to think. But I'm afraid that's not the way it always happens, And I wonder if it happens at all, Walking away into wonderful bliss ... Oh, I don't know how I'm gonna make it, "You can always just pretend." But I don't know if I ought to fake it, "It'll work out in the end." Ooh, I don't know how I'm ever gonna make it, "You can always just pretend." But I don't know if I really ought to fake it. "It'll work out!" Every story s'pposed to have a happy ending, At least that's what we're to say. The hero wins the race in just the nick of time, And he walks happily off into wonderful bliss ...

The Thinker 02:48
The Thinker By Jeff Johnson Inspired by sculpture by Auguste Rodin (1840 - 1917) Look in the mirror, And who do I see? Somebody different than me. Look at the face, It looks just like me. But there's someone behind it I've not seen ... I don't know who you are, I don't know what you're doing, I don't know what you're saying. I don't know who you are, I don't know why you're acting, I don't know who you're being. It's taken some time, 'cause I've been inclined, To let anything come in my mind. I'm starting to see, That this isn't me, I've acted the wrong part far too long ... I don't know who you are, I don't know what you're doing, I don't know what you're saying. I don't know who you are, I don't know why you're acting, I don't know who you're being. All my life, I've sat here on my chair of stone, Storing up the knowledge I've acquired. I'm sure you've seen the statue in my honor, Gathering the waste from all the birds.

All Hallows' Eve By Jeff Johnson Inspired by the novel by Charles Williams The telephone rang, She called out his name. But he'd never listened, So why should he now, When the telephone rang? They'd both long forgotten, The promises made at the start of the road, 'Till the telephone rang. "All Hallows' Eve, All Hallows' Eve, All Hallows' Eve's upon us." Long, long ago, as the fairy tales go, They gave up their lives to be one, In ceremony at a great big old church, Where nobody had any fun. But as the years passed and society amassed, Their love had begun to decay. At first it was slow, but it slowly gained speed, Until everything seemed to be falling apart, And there didn't appear to be anything possible, Until she called up – And the telephone rang. "We've got to get out of here, Or we will regret that we didn't confess, That the telephone rang." The telephone rang. "We've got to stop now or we'll never believe, That the telephone rang." "All Hallows' Eve, All Hallows' Eve, All Hallows' Eve's upon us."

Whatever Happened To The Human Race? By Jeff Johnson Inspired by the book by Francis Schaeffer Whatever happened to the human race? I'm trying to find it, but there's little trace. A rain is falling on this crippled place, It adds confusion to the things I face, It adds confusion to the ... Ordinary man, Has a home, has a family. With ordinary plans, Granting peace and affluency. But something deep inside, Lashes out like a lion. Yes, something isn't right, So he tries to conceal it. Whatever happened to the human race? I'm trying to find it ... Where do we go? And who shall we be? Will we become as the future we see? But look through the mist, there is something that shines, It refuses to dim and continues to glow. It reflects on the faces I see as I pass, There is something about it, I've got to keep searching. Whatever happened, Whatever happened to the human race? I've got to keep searching ...

Help Me 03:00
Help Me By Jeff Johnson Evening, Rainstorm comes down upon the city. Somewhere, Lonely, there sits a young man staring. Life flew by him, Oh so quickly. Hear his whispers, Through the shadows: "Help me, someone, help me. Help me, someone, help me." Morning, Sunshine reflecting through the window, Husband, Waving, as he heads out to work. Children, Grown up, are far away in college. Life flew by her, Oh so quickly, Hear her whisper, Through the shadows: "Help me, someone, help me ..." Life flies by us, Oh so quickly, Hear our whispers, Through the shadows: "Help us, someone, help us."

The Moulin De La Galette By Dave Meyer After the painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841 - 1919) Dancers sway as sunlight dances, Across the faces of gay romancers, It's the music of a Sunday in France, At the Moulin de la Galette. And courtesy of the Louvre museum, We all have a chance to see 'em. Wouldn't we all love to be, At the Moulin de la Galette? They're all show-stoppers and they love to flaunt it, In their straw hats, toppers and Sunday bonnets, Even a nice head or two with nothing on it, At the Moulin de la Galette. And aren't they comfortable sitting there: The girl on her bench and the man in his chair? They don't dance, they just come out for the air, To the Moulin de la Galette. And courtesy of the Louvre museum, We all have a chance to see 'em. Wouldn't we all love to be, At the Moulin de la Galette? Old Renoir sits back and he studies his crowd, His colors are warm, but his reds are loud. It's enough to make some impressionistic mothers proud, Of the Moulin de la Galette. And courtesy of the Louvre museum, We all have a chance to see 'em. Wouldn't we all love to be, At the Moulin de la Galette?

Gaugin's Dream / What Keeps Me Here? By Jeff Johnson & Dave Meyer I wonder if this life is more than what it seems to be, A mansion on a hillside or a money-covered tree? I know I've come upon this exit many times before, And every time I do so, I quickly shut the door. But this time I'm considering the journey that awaits, A journey that the status quo will not think all that great. And maybe there'll be fortune there and maybe there'll be fame, And maybe I might never have a penny to my name. But either way I'm closing in on what I see as true, A life caught in the 'rat race' is not what I'm to do. You call it "fantasy," you call it what you may, But I would rather go this route than any other way, On any given day ... "Don't go now." I have to. "Don't leave us now." I have to ... Why do I feel so alone? Always feeling so alone ... I step into the mountains and close the door behind, And wander through the photographs and the songs of my yesterdays. A man without a country is what I try to be, Forget about my journey and what I'm growing up to be. What keeps me here? I don't know. My friends are gone – should I follow? Don't ask me now, I don't care. Find me for the answer, if you can, tomorrow ...

Princess And The Jester By Jeff Johnson You're a princess and I'm just a jester in this court of life. You're a rose in the springtime blowing softly in the evening breeze. You're yourself, you're unique and you're beautiful, so beautiful, And I sit here wondering how it's possible that you are my wife. Somebody slap me, Wake me up to reality. Surely I'm dreaming, Tell the truth, before I believe. You must be joking me, I can tell, yes you're kidding me. Yet, there you are, And you're saying that you love me, too. You're a princess and I'm just a jester in this court of life. You're a rose in the springtime blowing softly in the evening breeze. You're yourself, you're unique and you're beautiful, so beautiful, And I sit here wondering how it's possible that you are my wife.

Now I Am Free By Jeff Johnson I was locked inside a cell, I was alone. they closed the door and lost the key, I was alone. Darkness painted my four walls, Fear and I were friends. Silence was my radio, I was lonely, very lonely. You, you came into my life, Now I am free I can't understand how I deserved to be set free, 'cause all that I did was to believe that you were real. You, you came along, opened the door and I walked out, Out, into the light where I could see for miles and miles ... How beautiful this life could be knowing you.

Even If By Jeff Johnson One day, Lord, your way is clear, I can see it, I understand it, I know that I'm walking in your will. Another day, When I do not know, Lord, I blame you, oh, I'm sorry, But it's just that I wish I understood. But you've said, That you will not leave, And you'll stay with me and you'll help me see, Oh, you've promised this for eternity ... So I know, That I am secure, Even if I'm not sure, even if I'm not sure, Even if I'm not sure where I'm going.

about

When we look upon water we see only the surface and the surrounding scenery it reflects. Beneath lies the deep with all its mystery. One must break through to touch "the face of the deep."

Jeff Johnson's album does just this – it plunges into our depths as people. Sometimes caressing, often piercing, Jeff pulls away the veneer, bringing to light those things we all seek to hide.

The thrust of The Face Of The Deep is evident after one listen, but the one who digs into allusions suggested by the album will not be forsaken. There are treasures to be found.

If you listen to the introduction to "Happy Ending" with Giacomo Balla's painting The Staircase of Goodbyes in mind; if you think of the movies of the 30s and 40s when listening to "Happy Ending;" if you recall Rodin's sculpture masterpiece The Thinker; if you have read the classic novel All Hallows' Eve by Charles Williams; if you have read or seen Francis Schaeffer's Whatever Happened To The Human Race', then you will not only hear the cry "Help Me," but you will understand it. And there is no little difference between hearing and understanding.

The rest of The Face Of The Deep is equally revealing to the careful eye. For example, "The Moulin De La Galette" and "Gauguin's Dreams/What Keeps Me Here'" can almost be considered a trilogy dedicated to impressionistic painters. There is a twist here, though. The "hero" of this trilogy takes a different road and therefore reaches a different conclusion.

This album is not one of total despair. There is hope, but that hope is tempered with an honesty limited by our humanness which is expressed vividly in "Even If I'm Not Sure."

Jeff Johnson's task is to expose "those things we all seek to hide." Our responsibility is to look, to hear, to respond – or to ignore.

Music Review –

....effusive imagery, thought-provoking lyrics and meandering synthesizer - a theatrical performance with classical keyboards. A gentle cultural journey replete with grace to hope and trust...an audiophile work of singular excellence. Light rock with philosophical flavor. Chic. Arty. – Jim Long / Campus Life
