Do not let your hearts be troubled, Do not let your hearts be troubled, Trust in God, Trust also in me. In my Father’s house, In my Father’s house, In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place, Prepare a place for you. And I’ll return to take you where I am, Take you home with me. I am the Way, I am the Truth and the Life. Come with me in my Father’s house.
2.
Lord, we cry to you, In these days of darkest plague. May we know that we are seen and we are loved. Keep us Lord from falling down, May your hands hold us. Rest our souls, Be our shelter, Be our shield. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, Have mercy on me, A sinner.

Blessed be the Lord, He has heard my voice, And my cry for help - He is my shield, he is my strength. My heart trusts in him, For my life is his, I exalt his name with this song of gratefulness.

God, be with me this day, Be before me, And behind me. Be beneath me, And above me. Be on my right hand, And on my left hand. Be with me when I lie down, And when I rise up. Be within me, And all around me.

Some comments from Jeff about the songs –

IN MY FATHER’S HOUSE
“In My Father’s House,” based on a text from John 14 is one of those songs from start to finish that’s been special. Composed by Erik Ronning (who also composed the “Kyrie” and “Agnus Dei” on previous releases) was originally written as a choral piece. Erik shared it with me as I was gathering music to consider recording with Janet last Spring 2021. I knew from the very beginning when I first played through it that it was one of “those songs.” Janet and I recorded her voice and my piano live in the studio. The goal from the start was to keep it simple and not screw it up! The beautiful string parts written and performed by Wendy Goodwin (violin) with cellist Dylan Rieck along with Brian Dunning’s flute add an elegance to the track without overwhelming it.

The text is profound and deeply reassuring to those who have placed their hope and trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Through His sacrificial death and subsequent resurrection, the incarnated God of the universe has prepared an eternal place for each of us.

AMULET/THE JESUS PRAYER
Both of these songs have appeared in previous releases. “The Jesus Prayer” on LAUDS and “Amulet” released as a single in 2020. The video for “The Jesus Prayer” has become one of our most popular videos on YouTube. I once read a comment by a viewer that they wished it would go on longer and that got me thinking.

My original intention was to have this longer form of the music flow out of the original Jesus Prayer chant but I loved the juxtaposition of the text in Psalm 91 that Amulet is based on with the sentiment of the simple words that make up the Jesus Prayer.

Psalm 91 is an “amulet psalm” with the idea that in reciting it, a person would have a deeper sense of God’s guarding power. This idea is not unlike the meaning behind the album’s title, “Caim” which can be defined as a “circle prayer.”

YOUR OPEN HAND
My solo piano pieces tend to be fairly simplistic. But I’m always going for a strong melody which I think this piece features in the second section. I love how the arrangement expands in the this section with Janet’s two vocal lines combined with the strings and flute.

The title takes its inspiration from the mind boggling idea of the Creator’s hand open to all creatures for their sustenance in Psalm 145.

SANCTUS
Another wonderful song composed by Erik Ronning, the “Sanctus” is an important part of many of the liturgies of the major Christian denominations. Yet like all Christian liturgy, it shouldn’t be forgotten that it is based on scriptural passages of profound implications. I include the English translation of the traditional Latin verse which speaks of the holiness of God and His deserving worship and glory by all creation. Here also are the words (from Psalm 118) sung by the followers of Jesus as He made His way from the Mount of Olives to the gates of Jerusalem on a donkey just prior to his passion and resurrection.

BLESSED BE THE LORD
I wrote this simple chorus several years ago while sitting in an ancient convent high above the town of Praiano on the Amalfi coast in Italy. For several days in a row, I would hike up the thousand steps each morning to this beautiful space where I would pray and read from the Psalms. While this is a simple song, the words are powerful and hold great hope for those who entrust their lives to the God of the Psalms.

BEHOLD, THE CLOUDS
Another simple piano piece that is entirely built around a three note motif that moves between three chords. The piano’s sparseness allows other musical elements to weave in their own voices and counter melodies. A song for watching clouds and to be reminded of our humble place in the universe, as these words from Job 35 say:

Look at the heavens, and see;
    and behold the clouds,
which are higher than you.

CAIM (Circle Prayer Version)
We often think of “circle prayers” originating from the Christian Celtic tradition from the likes of Patrick of Ireland and the beautiful “Breastplate” prayer attributed to him. Yet it should be noted that the Celts were ultimately transplanting the words such as those found in Psalm 139 into their own unique surroundings and culture. Words like these can be prayer anytime of the day in any circumstance to remind us that God is always with us and every aspect of our being.
