It is well that it should be so at the passing of the dark, For as nature's ageless yearning to the voice of the dawn must hark, So our souls no longer cherish what the night has learned to give; But instead the One who's healing wounds of night with light to live. Oh, where is the dawn? – Lyrics for "The Passing Of The Dark" by Sandy Simpson originally released on Outrigger Records (1985).

about

A compilation of instrumentals featured on Icons, Fallen Splendor , The Awakening, The Passing Of The Dark along with two additional cuts.

Featuring –
Jeff Johnson: Keys
Sandy Simpson: Guitars & keys

Introduction –
By turns serene and dynamic, these instrumental pieces sample the spectrum of ArkMusic's artists between 1984 and 1987. As a "best of" instrumental album, it shows the variety of these artists, and the increasing place given to instrumental music over the four year span. Three pieces were originally title numbers in art rock albums by Jeff Johnson and Sandy Simpson. Two are from "Icons" (1984) and "Fallen Splendor" (1986) and two from the Johnson-Simpson collaboration, "The Awakening" (1987). An instrumental version of Sandy's "The Passing Of The Dark" is included, and a new version of "The Awakening." "No Shadow Of Turning," which originally appeared as the title piece of the 1985 Meadowlark release, is here redone and newly recorded. This Mystery I Pose is not, however, simply a sampler. These selections form a seamless whole, pivoting around Keith Patman's nativity poem. Jeff Johnson captures the joy of the incarnation in his rendering of the "Coventry Carol," which accompanies Dallas McKennon's reading. – Gord Wilson

Music Reviews –

Everything from synthesizers and emulators to chimes, bells, and horses go into Mystery; the CD includes some steaming tenor saxophone by Dave Hagelganz and snatches of George Winston-style acoustic piano by Johnson. The album's range stretches from a mystical arrangement of the traditional English Coventry Carol to, just around the corner, some sudden heavy metal licks.
