This simple chorus, by the gifted modern composer John L. Bell, is one that I have been performing for many years and a piece that I had always hoped to record. The words, “Don’t be afraid,” accompany Jesus throughout his earthly life from the very beginning when the angels announce his birth to the morning that he appears to the disciples after he has risen from the dead. It has served to help a number of close friends of mine through times of great trials.

The initial piano track was recorded live and the vocal was added later. The opening vocal section like all of the chants on “Broken, Gazing” were recorded with a droning note in my headphones and then edited later.

I love the interaction of Wendy’s violin and Brian’s flute on this arrangement and their playing here is indicative of the listening that goes on within the kind of chamber music that we perform together.
