Gaugin's Dream / What Keeps Me Here?
By Jeff Johnson & Dave Meyer

I wonder if this life is more than what it seems to be,
A mansion on a hillside or a money-covered tree?
I know I've come upon this exit many times before,
And every time I do so, I quickly shut the door.

But this time I'm considering the journey that awaits,
A journey that the status quo will not think all that great.
And maybe there'll be fortune there and maybe there'll be fame,
And maybe I might never have a penny to my name.

But either way I'm closing in on what I see as true,
A life caught in the 'rat race' is not what I'm to do.
You call it "fantasy," you call it what you may,
But I would rather go this route than any other way,
On any given day ...

"Don't go now."
I have to.
"Don't leave us now."
I have to ...

Why do I feel so alone?
Always feeling so alone ...

I step into the mountains and close the door behind,
And wander through the photographs and the songs of my yesterdays.
A man without a country is what I try to be,
Forget about my journey and what I'm growing up to be.

What keeps me here?
I don't know.
My friends are gone – should I follow?

Don't ask me now,
I don't care.
Find me for the answer, if you can, tomorrow ...
