Wanderlust (Mystery & Fabrication)
By Jeff Johnson
– Strasbourg, France / August 1990
In every man there is a boy,
In every woman is a girl,
Who longs to touch the stars,
While dancing in the clouds.

Great Romantics
By Jeff Johnson
– Neuschwanstein & Hohenschwangau Castles
Füssen, Germany / August 1988
"The king was quite romantic."
That is what she said of him,
As she led us through the castle rooms of Hohenschwangau.
A prisoner of his musings,
A dreamer, more than royalty –
A traveler on a long, lost trail of shadow lands and fantasy.
And looking from this window at his castle on the hill,
I have a sense of what he dreamed, the vision survives still.
He was, after all, the great romantic.
He was, after all, the great romantic.
And all of us are dreamers,
As we stare into our mirrors,
Imagining we're someone that we never had a chance to be.
Watching from our windows,
Pulling strings, remote controlling,
Holding up the great facades that prop our lives with meaning.
And looking from our windows at his castle on the hill,
I have a sense of what he dreamed, the vision survives still.
We are, after all, just great romantics,
We are, after all, just great romantics.
When we lay awake at night staring at our ceiling full of stars,
Mystery and fabrication wage war on our ceiling full of stars.
We are, after all, just great romantics,
We are, after all, just great romantics.

Vincent

Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)
By Don McLean
Starry, starry night,
Paint your palette blue and gray,
Look out on a summer's day,
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul.
Shadows on the hills,
Sketch the trees and the daffodils,
Catch the breeze and the winter chills,
In colors on the snowy linen land.
Now I understand,
What you tried to say to me,
And how you suffered for your sanity,
And how you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they did not know how,
Perhaps they'll listen now.
Starry, starry night,
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze,
Swirling clouds in violet haze,
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue.
Colors changing hue,
Morning fields of amber grain,
Weathered faces lined in pain,
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand.
Now I understand,
What you tried to say to me,
And how you suffered for your sanity,
And how you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they did not know how,
Perhaps they'll listen now.
For they could not love you,
But still your love was true.
And when no hope was left in sight,
On that starry, starry night,
You took your life, as lovers often do.
But I could've told you Vincent,
This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.
Starry, starry night,
Portraits hung in empty halls,
Frame-less heads on nameless walls,
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget.
Like the strangers that you've met,
The ragged men in ragged clothes,
The silver thorn of bloody rose,
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.
Now I think I know,
What you tried to say to me,
And how you suffered for your sanity,
And how you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they're not listening still,
Perhaps they never will.

Across The Sea
By Jeff Johnson
– Harlech Castle, Wales / August 1989
I'm looking out from Harlech Castle,
I'm looking out across the sea,
And there are ships upon the water,
They come to carry me.
There is a place across the ocean,
There is a place across the sea,
And I will leave to join the voyage,
Across the deep, dark sea.

The Tyger
By Jeff Johnson
Words from "Songs Of Experience" by William Blake (1757 - 1831)
Tyger Tyger, burning bright,
In the forests of the night;
What immortal hand or eye,
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
In what distant deeps or skies.
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand, dare seize the fire?
And what shoulder, & what art,
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand? & what dread feet?
What the hammer? what the chain,
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp,
Dare its deadly terrors clasp!
When the stars threw down their spears
And water'd heaven with their tears:
Did he smile his work to see?
Did he who made the Lamb make thee?
Tyger Tyger burning bright,
In the forests of the night:
What immortal hand or eye,
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

Hadrian's Wall
By Jeff Johnson
– Hadrian's Wall, Housesteads, England / August 1989
I am not prepared at all,
My body, like a Roman ruin, shudders in the storm.
It is not unlike my life,
A heap of schemes and projects that lie crumbled on the ground.
But like Hadrian's Wall, I'm still standing –
Standing on this wall,
Standing in this storm.
Stretching clear across this world,
The 'Emperor of Glory' has decreed it to stand.
Reaching right into my heart,
A barrier of grace against the wretch that I am.
Just like Hadrian's Wall, I'm still standing –
Standing on this wall,
I'm standing in this storm.

Rolling Along
By David Meyer
– Tour de Zon, Ommen, Holland / August 1989
I left the world one morning with my life rolled in a pack,
And now I've got this feeling that I won't soon be back.
I've got miles to go,
To a place that I know,
And I'm rolling along,
Rolling slow.
Well I rolled up to the mountains and I rolled down to the sea,
But until it started raining I didn't know that I was free.
I've got miles to go,
To a place that I know,
And I'm rolling along,
Rolling slow.

"Perfekto"
By Jeff Johnson
– Prague, Czechoslavakia / August 1990
For David, Matthias & Eva
An impromptu act of love,
They danced across the square,
On a moonlit August night there in Prague.
As we watched beneath Jan Huss,
Below Bohemian sky,
An old drunken fool yelled out from the dark:
"Perfeckto!"
From the dark,
"Perfekto!"
Like a Riemenschneider face,
The truth is carved with grace,
Then is worked into the lines of our lives.
An impromptu act of love,
Just like the old fool said,
As he stumbled through the street in the dark:
"Perfeckto!"
From the dark,
"Perfekto!"

Wash Away
By Jeff Johnson
– Mont St. Michel, France / August 1990
"Running like a lion,
Diving like an eagle ..."*
St. Michelle I have returned to you:
A battered soul, a wind-swept heart.
A mass of pilgrims has besieged you,
Despite the dark clouds overhead.
The water pours out of the heavens,
And you have caught me unaware.
But let the rain fall down,
Let it wash away my sin,
Let it soak my heart with life.
Let it flow from Thee,
Let it flow into the sea,
Let the rain fall down on me.
"Running like a lion,
Diving like an eagle,
Though this darkness that I move in,
Cannot keep me from your light."*
So let the rain fall down,
Let it wash away my sin,
Let it soak my heart with life.
Let it flow from Thee,
Let it flow into the sea,
Let the rain fall down on me ...
